Roundabout for Rt 31 and John Fitch

Several years ago it was reported that the Rt 31, John Fitch Hwy and Rindge Road met the warrant for installation of traffic signals. Today it was reported in the Telegram and Gazette that the intersection will instead be redesigned as a roundabout. This is good news. Roundabouts have lower accident rates than signals and lower injury and property damage levels than signals.

FYI: in a powerpoint presentation on traffic mitigation measures Leominster indicated that they were considering replacing the signals at monument square with a roundabout. Leominster was also considering a roundabout at the intersection of Rt 12 and Rt 117 though I don't think it would work there due to the angle between Rt 117 and Rt 12.

Don't know how to negotiate/signal at a roundabout? Simple, if taking the first exit signal right, otherwise signal left until passing the last exit that you won't be using, then switch to a right signal.

    A little background info...

The roundabout design for Rte.31 is nearing 25%, with PS&E due later in the fall.

We hired MS Transportation to design the thing (they've had experience). MHD district 3 is real big into these things, although I think it will take some selling to get the public convinced.

It's part of our (Dreamtime Builders) traffic mitigation for the Arn-How Farm project.
